Happy Artificial Holiday with
Strong Commercial Overtones

A couple years ago, I took a poetry class. This was a huge step outside of my comfort zone, because, as I've mentioned before, I don't feel that I am that strong of a writer. Also, poetry is a much more difficult medium than many people think. You have to find just the right words, the right order, the right rhythm, the right form. Anything amiss makes the poem fall flat. At any rate, it was Valentine's Day, and we were writing sonnets. So, in the spirit of the season, I'll share mine with you.

Happy Artificial Holiday with
Strong Commercial Overtones

The silly hearts and flowers everywhere
The cupids, bears, the songs and sappy cards
Cologne and perfume make her want fresh air.
She tries to get away and disregards
The pain within her heart, her heart of stone
Although she says that she is "fine just fine"
She can't ignore she cannot be alone
She needs to find herself a valentine.
He left her heart and now she has to see
The happy couples walking two by two
Part of something that she used to be
Before he ran away for someone new.
So if you think she does not truly care,
Look into her eyes—it is lonely there.

I think that this girl is you and I! We are one, you see. :P Just kidding, although I do understand how she feel! I love your sonnet!

Hello Janel, from another alumna of that same poetry class (this is Katie, by the way):) I think your blog is fabulous, very you, and I like that poem every bit as much--nay, more--than I did the first time I read it.

Thank you both for your very kind comments! Katie, how are you? I haven't seen you for a long time. How's life after graduation?

I'm great. Life after graduation involves work . . . ick. But more time to read what I want to . . . yay!

And I just finished applying to grad programs, because I miss school. (Yes, yes, I know. I'm crazy)
